How It Works

Our students use a variety of types of technology for their online learning - desktop, laptop or tablet. Online maths tutoring works best using an interactive whiteboard - and some are better than others. We use ‘Idroo’, for which we pay a subscription, but which is free for our tutees. (We also have a subscription to ‘Limnu’, as a back up). In sessions, this is generally used in conjunction with Skype (although FaceTime and WhatsApp video also work well). Clear guidance is given in advance of the first session.

Studying

We don’t have a formula - a set programme that all our tutees follow. From experience, we know that individual needs are very different. Some maths concepts and skills are more important than others, as they lay the foundations for other areas of maths, so we often start there. An initial broad assessment is often helpful to diagnose strengths and weaknesses.

For some of our tutees (including homeschooled students), our programme covers the full syllabus specification. For others, our work is mostly supplementary help on the more challenging topics. Often, our work is a combination of helping students with work they are struggling with at school and some work specifically focused on strengthening the broader foundations of their understanding. We have lots of resources at our disposal and can set practice work (for the period between sessions), as required. As exams approach, we focus squarely on past paper practice and exam technique - including how mark schemes work - giving our students an extra advantage.
